Entry #7 #Relavency

Using hashtags can expand your reach to a new audience online. They can also be used to filter out posts, an alternative to filtering specific posts one might be searching for. Many art communities also make hashtags where their followers can send fan art and participate in challenges. There are a myriad of ways that hashtags can be used to connect users with similar interests or find an audience for said content.

Using hashtags should also be very limited when making posts. Sure, one might think that a large number of hashtags will help reach many different communities and bring in new viewers. Instead, this could have the opposite effect, deterring users from the post. As Hannah Macready states, “Limit the number of hashtags you use. More isn’t always better. It actually looks spammy.” It’s even more important that you only use hashtags that relate to ones post, or it could be seen as an interjection to an unrelated community.

The number of hashtags that should be used in a post varies from platform to platform. The most common trend is using two to three hashtags per post. However, in recent times, it seems that this number could drop to zero. Many social media websites and applications have relied heavily on algorithms to feed their users similar content. As explained in Clodagh O'Brien article, Instagram decided to remove the feature of following certain hashtags and explain how Elon Musk has X users to stop using them as it looks ugly and serves no purpose. Showing that social media platforms want to remove and phase out the use of hashtags.

  1. Hey Humberto. I enjoyed reading your post about the use of hashtags and its benefits. You made a great point explaining how and why we should use hashtags by stating they can be used to filter out specific posts and mainly to connect with a specific audience.
